Tarot Beginner's Guide · Part 3
The Four Tarot Suits and Their Elements
Each of the four Minor Arcana suits is linked to a classical element and an area of life. Learn these four pairings and you can get your bearings on any minor card at a glance.

Suits and elements at a glance
Western tradition describes the world through four elements: fire, water, air and earth. Tarot's four suits map onto them. On the Rider-Waite-Smith Magician card, the wand, cup, sword and pentacle laid out on the table are the symbols of these elements, showing that he has every tool he needs.
Here is a quick reference you can come back to:
Wands: fire. Passion, action, creativity and career ambition.
Cups: water. Emotions, relationships, intuition and inner life.
Swords: air. Thought, communication, judgement, conflict and truth.
Pentacles: earth. Money, work, the body, possessions and practical results.
Wands and Cups
Wands behave like fire: quick to start and pushing things forward. They often appear in questions about new projects, motivation, confidence or starting a business. Their strength is courage, and their weak spot is impulsiveness or enthusiasm that burns out fast.
Cups behave like water: soft and deep. They are tied to romance, friendship, family and your emotional state. They ask you to listen to your feelings, though a reading full of Cups can also point to getting lost in moods or daydreams.
Swords and Pentacles
Swords behave like air: invisible but sharp. They describe how you think and speak, including decisions, analysis, arguments and worry. Many Swords cards look tense because the mind can cut through confusion, but it can also wound others or yourself.
Pentacles behave like earth: steady and concrete. They cover income, work skills, health habits and long-term building. Their pace is slow, and they reward patience and practical steps rather than bursts of excitement.
Using elements in a reading
When you draw a minor card, first ask which area of life it points to, then look at the number and the picture. If a Cups card turns up in a work question, it may be hinting that what is really holding you back is how you feel about people, not your ability.
It also helps to notice which suit dominates a spread. Lots of Swords suggests overthinking or stress. Lots of Pentacles puts practical matters at the centre. A suit that is missing altogether may point to an area you have been ignoring.
